We acknowledge that there are certain basic principles that shall guide the Board of Education in its actions and activities on behalf of our students and our community. The mission of the Farmingdale School District is to educate our students to become independent thinkers and problem solvers. It is our goal to empower each student to meet the challenges of tomorrow's emerging world. The District will provide a safe, nurturing environment in which individual and civic responsibility is fostered, diversity is respected, and all students are enabled to realize their full potential. To that end, we will:

ESTABLISH FARMINGDALE AS A HIGH ACHIEVING SCHOOL DISTRICT AS EVIDENCED BY HIGH LEVELS OF STUDENT PERFORMANCE IN ALL AREAS INCLUDING NEW YORK STATE ASSESSMENTS AND REGENTS EXAMS

HOWITT HAPPENINGS

Mrs. Steffen's seventh grade students from Howitt Middle School were asked to "think outside their own box" and connect with the world around them. Mrs. Steffen asked students to create "artistic noise" as a social awareness art project, not to exploit people's difficult situations, but rather to bring attention to them. Students learned about being proactive, by doing a good deed, without expecting anything in return. Art education has the opportunity to reach the essence of the soul and inspire moral character. Mrs. Steffen said that she was very moved because "these students have shown great examples of being humane human beings. The work is on display at the Farmingdale Public Library for the month of January.

On March 8th & 9th, Mrs. Kreuter's 8th grade Home & Career Skills classes welcomed more than 25 toddlers and preschoolers into the classroom for a play date. Together the students and the visitors prepared home made Play Doh to play with. The students had learned previously in their Child Development Unit that Play Doh was an excellent aide when developing gross and fine motor skills. The activity was age appropriate and encouraged students to work with the small children to make special creations. Fun was had by all and the Middle Schoolers had a wonderful learning experience while observing and playing with the little ones. The visitors were the younger siblings, family and friends of the students and the children of the faculty and staff at Howitt.

The Computer Lab will be open after school on Tuesdays and Thursdays, from 2:45 to 3:30 p.m. in room 302 for students who need to do school work. Sign in as soon as you arrive.

VIDEOCONFERENCING AT HOWITT!

Mrs. Giebel’s and Mrs. Randazzo’s Computer Skills classes participated in a Cyber Bullying Video Conference delivered by the McMillen Center for Health Education. The students participated in various activities that were encouraged by the McMillen educator on the effects that their behavior had on others and how negative behavior can result in consequences. Many of the students were selected to field various questions and participate in asynchronous activities. The Eighth grade students did an outstanding job of representing FPS and we are very proud!

Mrs. Pietronegro's classes participated in an anti-bullying video conference. During the program, students learned about facts and myths relating to bullying, participated in a role play activity and analyzed mini video situations. Students participated and interacted with the presenters from the anti-bullying program. Overall, this program was a success!

What is a Middle Schooler?

What are middle schoolers?
I was asked one day.
I knew what they were
But what should I say?

They are noice and confusion.
They are silence that is deep.
They are sunshine and laughter
or a cloud that will weep.

They are swift as arrows.
They are wasters of time.
they want to be rich,
But cannot save a dime.

They are rude and nasty.
They are as polite as can be.
They want parental guidance.
But fight to be free.

They are aggressive and bossy.
They are timid and shy.
They know all the answers,
But still will ask "Why?"

They are awkward and clumsy.
They are graceful and poised.
They are ever changing.
But do not be annoyed.

What are middle schoolers?
I was asked one day.
They are the future unfolding
So do not stand in their way.
...Elizabeth Langdale
